BTS#2: Why should you even learn SQL & Databases?
Plus the surprise I mentioned last week
Welcome to the second edition behind the scenes of the SQL & Databases for Sports course creation. Last week I talked about why I’m building the course.
Today I want to talk about what expectations you should have for the course and why you should even care about learning SQL and databases.
Learning any new skill can seem like an uphill battle, especially if it is one where the teaching and technology are traditionally pretty outdated and archaic.
There are a lot of things that go on when it comes to a database and SQL.
You have to manage all of the data, make sure it’s structured correctly, and make sure that your query speeds are fast enough to deliver that data.
It can seem like an impossible task without a good solution, especially when it comes to learning how to apply it to sports analytics.
I’m sure if you’ve tried to learn about SQL and databases before then you probably have felt overwhelmed with a lot of fluff that courses or professors will talk about that really doesn’t help with learning the fundamentals.
And then you eventually just move on.
If your goal is to work in sports or data analytics, YOU NEED TO KNOW SQL & DATABASES.
Every team, organization, and company that you may work for are all going to use a database and data at some level.
Knowing your way around a database unlocks so much for you and your career.
I’m creating this course to help you build the solid foundation needed for understanding databases and SQL in an easy-to-follow format also helps you to really understand the core concepts.
Throughout the course, you’ll have videos, quizzes, and a project to help develop that core understanding.
After a lot of thought, ideation, and feedback from you guys here is how the course will be laid out:
Each module will have sub-modules (between 4 → 10) diving into topics about that module.
For example, here are the sub-modules for Module 3 → Beginner SQL:
As you can see the course on release will be jam-packed with value.
If you’ve never taken a course about SQL or databases then this is the one for you.
Even if you have taken a SQL course you can still learn quite a few things.
This course is everything I wish I had when I was first learning SQL and databases and is my collective knowledge from the past 7 years of learning and working with them.
So is this course for you?
I truly believe that SQL and databases are must-learn skills for working in a data career.
I’ve structured the course to help you learn SQL and databases while applying it to sports analytics(specifically football/soccer).
This course will help you:
learn the essential foundations
set up your own database for projects
have one of the most important skills you can have
With that, this course isn’t going to be for everyone.
If you are:
Someone who already is a master at databases
Not willing to follow the video tutorials
Work on the practice problems as they come up
Rewatch any videos where the concepts might be difficult
I will be honest with you and say it probably won’t be worth the investment.
But for everyone else, I believe that the course can provide excellent value no matter what level you are and help you to develop one of the most important technical skills you can have.
So with that being said,
To say thanks for reading this email and for your support, I am opening up sales for you guys for a “pre-pre-sale” at an even more discounted price than I will for the public.
You can find access to the course here:
https://mckay-s-site.thinkific.com/courses/sql-sports
The course is priced right now at $39 until I launch the official pre-sale to the public on Thursday, August 15th, 2024 when the price will then move up to $59 and then will be on full sale for $74 when the course goes live on August 21st.
So if you want to get the course for the best possible price (like it probably won’t even go lower than this during Black Friday & the Holidays) then this is your best chance.
I appreciate the support and love and hope you love the course as much as I think you will.
Until next time
McKay
